The rich original art of the Tajiks is the result of centuries-old creativity of the people, which in the field of musical art has a huge heritage rooted in ancient times and on the basis of this heritage, Tajik musical art develops today. As noted by the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, respected Emomali Rahmon, “Our national culture, which has a strong foundation, is now famous in the world for its history, ancient, multifaceted and peculiar traditions and peculiarities, in particular, rare written monuments, original works of fine art, musical works by Shashmakom and Falak and hundreds of other achievements and phenomena of literature and art ”.
As you know, the first half of the twentieth century brought with it a whole system of previously unknown musical concepts such as a composer, European forms and genres, and in this context, one of the turning points in the history of modern Tajik musical culture is composing. According to the Decree of the Council of People’s Commissars (SNK) of the Tajik SSR “On the state of art in the republic and measures for its further development” (June 1, 1939), it was decided to form the Union of Composers of Tajikistan. In this regard, the composer Alexander Lensky was appointed chairman of the organizing committee. On January 9, 1940, the Union of Composers of Tajikistan was officially established in Dushanbe, consisting of the first professional musicians – composers A. Kamalov, Sh. Bobokalonov, S. Balasanyan, A. Lensky, S. Urbakh, N. Pulatov, Z. Shahidi, M. Volberg , F. Saliev and the first chairman of the Union of Composers of Tajikistan was Sergei Balasanyan. The Union of Composers of Tajikistan, as a creative and scientific professional organization of composers and musicologists of Tajikistan, was organized with the aim of developing the best traditions of world classical and Tajik music, educating young figures of musical culture and creating favorable conditions for the realization of creative potential.
The formation of the Union of Composers of Tajikistan undoubtedly contributed to the formation of a musical professional school in Tajikistan for the development of new traditions, study of the experience of world musical culture, as well as introduction to the system of European polyphonic genres. From 1939 to the present time, 14 Congresses of the Union of Composers of Tajikistan were held (1948, 1956, 1962, 1966, 1970, 1976, 1981, 1987,1992, 1998,2001,2007, 2016 and 2017). Over the years, Sergei Balasanyan, Alexander Lensky, Fazliddin Shakhobov, Ziyodullo Shagidi, Sharofiddin Sayfiddinov, Damir Dustmukhammadov, Talab Sattorov, Asliddin Nizomov, Kudratullo Hikmatov, Khurled Ashurov and Nizomov and Kudratullo Hikmatov, Shukhrat Ashurov have worked as the chairman of the Union of Composers of Tajikistan. Since March 2020, the Chairman of the Union of Composers of Tajikistan is Amirbek Musoev. Over the period of 80 years of creative activity, composers of Tajikistan have created dozens of operas, ballets, works for symphonic and orchestra of folk instruments, romances, oratorios, cantatas, instrumental pieces, music for films and other genres of professional music.

Balasanyan (State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Russia), ballet “Makomi ishk” by Firuz Bakhor (Samarkand), opera “The Return” by Y. Sabzanov (Tashkent). A full-length ballet film was shot based on T. Shahidi’s Rubai Khayyam.
And today our famous composers F. Bakhor, T. Shahidi, K. Yakhyaev, Z. Nishonov, A. Latifzoda, J. Obidpur, P. Turobi, Z. Mirshakar, L. Tolis, S. Khalilov, H. Pirov, A. Musoev, K. Hikmatov, A. Toshmatov, V. Abdurakhmonov, P. Sokhibova, Z. Zulfikorov, Sh. Kosimzoda, S. Khamidov, P. Maradaseinov, as well as young composers B. Toshev, J. Khalilov, Z. Rakhimi , N. Khamdamova, R. Barotov, F. Zikirov, U. Ibrokhimzoda and others contribute to the treasury of musical culture and personnel training. Currently, 5 doctors of sciences, 7 candidates of sciences, 8 laureates of the State Prize named after A. Rudaki, 3 Laureates of the Kamola Khujandi, 7 People’s Artists and 1 People’s Gafiz of the Republic of Tajikistan, 11 Honored Art Workers of the Republic of Tajikistan, 2 Honored Workers of the Republic of Tajikistan are members of the Union of Composers of Tajikistan, and 6 members of the Union of Composers were awarded government awards. It should be noted that the Union of Composers of Tajikistan now has a musical council, a bureau for the promotion of contemporary music, as well as sections “Creative and organizational”, “Musicology and musical criticism”, “Folklore and traditional music”, “Traditional composition”. In order to further develop professional music, by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan “On the Prize of the Union of Writers of Tajikistan and the Union of Composers of Tajikistan” since 2004, the Borbad Prize in the field of musical art has been established. At the present stage, the development of culture and cultural potential are recognized as one of the prevailing national directions of most of the peoples of the world, being considered one of the fundamental aspects of the development of modern society, determine the level of development of culture, the presence of favorable conditions for moral and creative self-expression of the individual. It should be noted with satisfaction that today Tajikistan is more and more actively involved in the orbit of world culture and the promotion of Tajik professional music abroad is acquiring truly grandiose proportions. It should be noted that thanks to the historical achievements during the period of state independence, Tajik art science, which is based on the development and implementation of innovative approaches and methodologies in research activities used in modern world humanitarian science to form a theoretical basis, has received recognition outside the country and in this context, The merits of our musicologists – Asliddin Nizamov, Farogati Azizi, Abduvali Abdurashidov, Firuz Ulmasov and Bahrinisso Kabylova – in the development of art history and research on the historical and theoretical aspects of professional and traditional music of Tajiks were appreciated.
Today, the scientific potential of the Union of Composers of Tajikistan has great prospects for the formation and development of national musical science, the creation of an integral scientific picture of the development of the professional musical culture of Tajikistan, the formation and development of a modern professional musical infrastructure. The development of culture is the most important factor in ensuring a decent quality of life for the population. The state policy in the sphere of culture is of fundamental importance for social development, the formation of a system of values and moral guidelines of the nation. It is cultural policy that defines the modern face of the nation and state. It should be noted that it was during the period of independence that culture took a worthy place in society, as a symbol of the spiritual image of the people, a unifier of scientific and intellectual power, an exponent of modern and ancient history, traditions, high morality and other national shrines. The main slogan of the day “Culture is the essence of the nation”, as something better, reflects the importance of the cultural policy of our state in this direction, permeated with high morality of humanism and love, tolerance and mutual respect, along with other spheres of culture, musical art today acquires special significance. Today, Tajikistan is making new successes at the global level, enriching the treasury of world culture with new masterpieces of poetry, music, and taking the necessary measures to systematically involve the broadest layers of society in the spiritual achievements of the modern world.
To consolidate these values, thanks to the constant care and special attention of the Founder of Peace and Unity, the Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, respected Emomali Rahmon, major changes have taken place in various areas of national culture, and the sphere of culture has achieved unprecedented success. During its 80 years of creative activity, the Union of Composers of Tajikistan has accumulated a huge potential that allows it to solve a variety of creative and scientific problems of the musical culture of Tajikistan. At present, members of the Union of Composers of Tajikistan, in order to further implement the cultural policy of the Government of the country and in response to the increased aesthetic needs of society, carry out an important mission in the development of spiritual culture.
